Tensions flared between Liam Coen and Robert Saleh following a surprising defeat for the San Francisco 49ers. Just moments after the Jacksonville Jaguars delivered the first loss of the season to the 49ers, a heated exchange unfolded between Jaguars head coach Liam Coen and Saleh, the defensive coordinator for San Francisco, as they exited the playing field.
As the two coaches crossed paths, Coen seemingly showed his displeasure by shaking his head, indicating that he wasn't interested in engaging with Saleh. However, as he continued to walk away, Coen turned back and shouted, “Keep my name out of your mouth,” directing his remark at Saleh. In response, Saleh approached Coen, but the specifics of their subsequent interaction remain unclear.
In the days leading up to their face-off, Saleh had voiced admiration for the Jaguars, highlighting their “really advanced signal-stealing type of system, where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation.” However, he was at pains to clarify in a recent press conference that he was not implying that the Jaguars had strayed from the rules of the game.
“There's nothing illegal about it,” Saleh affirmed in response to another question about his remarks. “I’m not suggesting that.”
When Coen was approached about the confrontation after the game, he opted to maintain a level of discretion. “Not a big deal,” he remarked. “Just keep that between us.”
Notably, Saleh was not obligated to speak to the media after the game, but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the incident with little concern. “I will try to clear it up, but I didn’t see what happened,” Shanahan commented. “So, I am not sure. I don’t think he should be that sensitive about it, but it is what it is. Not too worried about it.”
When questioned about Saleh’s previous remarks on Friday, Coen chose to keep the focus on his team. “I’m not going to speak on that fully right now,” he replied. “(We) have a huge game for us coming up this weekend. We’ve got a great defense that we’ve got to go and attack, and that’s where our whole mindset and mentality is right now.”
In the pivotal matchup against the 49ers, Jacksonville showcased their offensive capabilities, racking up a total of 325 yards with 174 yards coming through the air and 151 on the ground, including an impressive 48-yard sprint by Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr.
