This may sound like a redundant question, but you do not underestimate the importance of using tools properly in any field and naturally barbering.
Unsurprisingly, in barbering, your hands are considered a tool alongside your clippers, scissors, blades etc. the application of these tools is just as important as the tools themselves, for example, in Basketball, the follow-through or as it’s known, “flicking your wrist” is the last piece of your shooting motion and is the crucial finishing aspect of a good jump shot.

- Not breaking the cut into steps
- Tools not being set correctly or not being suitable for the job
- Not brushing/combing as you cut
He has a fantastic down-to-earth approach where the video feels like a conversation; he goes into the points while on a porch like an old friend giving you advice.
Alongside electric trimmers, scissors are a popular tool used to cut hair; this video from ‘MC Barber’ demonstrates how to use scissors appropriately. He covers basics such as thumb control, texture cutting, blunt cutting and the proper way to open and close your scissors.
What is a fade? It’s a haircut variation of the more popularly known short back and sides. Traditionally the haircut has the hair on top of the head slightly longer than all the other areas; however, with a fade haircut, the hair will gradually shorten as you make your way down the sideburns and nape of the neck. The beauty of the fade means that the density can be varied depending on each client’s hair color, texture and preferences.

This video is a perfect illustration of the multiple use of tools available within barbering. In this video, Amanda discusses how to think outside of the tools and think like a designer all while deftly using a Comb, Shears, Blow dryer, Clippers and Pins
The main tools for barbering and their uses are;
Straight bladed scissors are used to trim hair, beards, and mustaches. Well-made scissors will allow you to easily cut bangs, and the hair around sensitive areas such as around the ears. You can even use serrated scissors or a pair of shears on thinner hair to make the cut more even and complete.
There are endless types of combs available, depending on the hair length, texture and style.
- A barber comb usually has both fine and thick teeth that help keep the cut uniform for each section of hair.
- A fading comb has teeth that go from short to long and is especially useful when creating the popular fade cut.
- A scissor over comb is used for blending and achieving a close cut on shorter hair lengths.
Undoubtedly every barber will need electric clippers or trimmers in their toolkit. Clippers work due to the blades running smoothly along the contours of the head, this allows them to trim the hair without pulling the follicles out of the scalp. It’s important to get good quality clippers, your client will know otherwise when you use a cheap one on their hair.
